Change happens quickly

During my last post, I mentioned how our intentions were to stay up at Children’s until the surgery on June 20. The concern was Grair’s daily fevers needed monitored, as did his kidney functions and other “metrics” used to track blood counts, infections and other functions.

Perhaps it was the act of posting to the blog, or that the doctors found the correct medicinal cocktail, but somehow Grair fought through the ailments and surprised us all. Since our last post, Grair hasn’t had a fever. The doctors stopped one of his antibiotics and have switched to once a day for the other antibiotic. With the combination of all of these, Grair’s “metrics” have moved back to normal ranges, his energy and zest has returned, and best of all: Grair came home today!

It’s hard to believe that just last weekend Melissa and I were contemplating moving to Omaha for a month because we expected an extended stay. Tonight, we get to all stay at home and administer Grair’s antibiotics once a day (we were at three times a day before).

While Melissa and I feel the high levels of antibiotics were the cause of the fevers (we’re not medically trained, so take that for what it’s worth), the doctors believe a small microscopic piece of the vegetation growing in his stent broke off and lodged elsewhere in his body (most likely his lungs). This “new” infection was therefore causing the fevers. Grair was eventually able to fight this off (with the help of the antibiotics) and has since been fever free. If this is the case, the same situation could happen again, and we’d be back at Children’s.

Regardless of the source of the fevers, we’re home now! The first thing Grair wanted to do was play with his golf club outside, and it felt great to get outside and play!

If all goes well, we’ll run the antibiotics once a day until surgery on June 20. Surgery will bring its own adventures and challenges, but that’s another story at another time.

    • Grair, what wonderful news. I hope you have a terrific month and that
you gain strength and energy while you are home!

  2. It is wonderful to get the awesome news that you are able to spend some time at home prior to the 20th! I love your shirt! Many of us have asked the real ‘force’ for this, and, in the words of Master Yoda, “Answered these prayers have been.” Keep your head down while swinging your club, ( you can’t start that too soon ) and save me a piece of that cookie; I’ll be out to see you in August!

  3. Prettymans all- We are keeping you all lifted in prayer as little Grair goes into his surgery June 20.
