After the surgery, Grair’s chest was left open. This was done for a couple of reasons, but mostly to let fluid buildup and swelling occur without hindering comfort for Grair. After the surgery, we were told to expect the closing to occur in three or four days (Saturday or Sunday).
Dr. Hammel checked-up on Grair this morning and found that he was doing very well, therefore he has decided to go ahead and close Grair’s chest this afternoon. We are currently waiting for that surgery to start. The surgery will take place in Grair’s current room, no need to move him to the O.R.
The closing of the chest is the next major milestone after the surgery. Until his chest is closed, the rest of the testing, ventilator weening, and feeding can’t happen.
