Last night Grair finally made it home. After 12 days in the hospital, it feels great to be back in our comfortable surroundings!
Our stay back at home doesn’t come without some extra baggage, though. We’re stocked full of strong antibiotics that we administer three times a day. Grair has a central line (essentially a more permanent IV) in his arm that connects through a vein into his bloodstream. With thorough cleaning and a multiple step process, we’re able to setup the medications to help Grair fight off the majority of the infection.
Melissa has been the champion during all of this. She’s taken charge of the medication administration and is on her way to becoming one efficient nurse!
Shortly before we left, we found out that Grair will indeed need to have open heart surgery to replace his valve just to make sure all the infection is gone. We’ll run 4 more weeks of antibiotics (through June 18) and then on June 20 we will undergo the procedure. The doctors want to make sure there isn’t a chance for the infection to flare up again.
